Portál byl založen v roce 1990 s cílem pomáhat při výchově dětí a mládeže. Od začátku se proto zaměřil především na publikace z oborů pedagogika, psychologie a sociální práce, a to na odborné i populární úrovni. Později přibyly další oblasti jako sociologie, politologie, zdraví, média, antropologie, ekologie, filozofie, ekonomie, sémiotika či kulturologie.

Velkou skupinu čtenářů Portálu tvoří rodiče. Pro ně jsou určeny praktické příručky o výchověa také knihy her a nápadů rozvíjejících dětskou tvořivost, které úspěšně využívají i učitelé a vychovatelé. V posledních letech se Portál výrazně zaměřil také na problematiku těhotenství a mateřství. Rady najde v knihách i dospívající mládež a nejen jí jsou navíc určeny knihy her a cvičení sloužící k zachování bystrého rozumu, tělesné kondice a k nalezení místa v sociální skupině. Pro malé i starší děti Portál vydává pohádky, příběhy, říkadla.

Portál vychází vstříc i zájemcům o populárně psychologickou literaturu a snaží se uspokojovat zájem čtenářů o sebepoznání, vlastní duševní růst a poznání skutečných hodnot. Zároveň pomáhá řešit problematiku vztahů - partnerských, rodinných i pracovních. Setkání s významnými osobnostmi a jejich názory přibližuje edice Rozhovory.

Odborná literatura - publikace a slovníky, které tvoří asi polovinu produkce - je určena studentům nejrůznějších oborů vysokých škol i odborníkům v praxi, kteří nechtějí ztratit přehled o nových trendech a vývoji v oboru.

Příběhy a legendy v dalších edičních řadách umožňují nahlédnout do filozofií různých kultur a přinášejí inspiraci k hledání vlastní životní cesty.
